The History of our Church

Windward Baptist Church started out as a small Bible study in the home of Kevin and Roxanne Akana. The first Sunday Services were held on October 30, 1995 and there were eight people in attendance including Kevin, Roxanne and their daughter Kelsie. After a few months the Lord opened a door to rent a space in Temple Valley Shopping Center. The Church remained there for about 1 ½ years until another door was opened for the church to move into an old tourist shop behind the Hygienic Store. After much renovation this has been the home of Windward Baptist Church. God has definitely had his hand upon the ministry of this church and has brought many wonderful and faithful people to serve here. We have a mission at Windward Baptist Church, and that is to reach the world with the Gospel, one person at a time. We also want to be a blessing to the community by teaching the Word of God and providing a godly environment where people can relax and enjoy the fellowship and friendship of God's people while they grow in the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

Testimony of Pastor Kevin Akana

My name is Kevin Akana, I was born and raised in Hawaii. I am from Kahalu'u, Oahu. I was saved when I was in high school, and Castle High. A group of Christians came to the school and held an assembly where they displayed feats of strength. They invited us to come back that night to see more. When I went back that night, after they were finished entertaining us, they gave testimonies of how they were saved. The main speaker then preached and gave an invitation. It was that day that I received Jesus into my life. A football coach of mine named Casey Boyett invited me to visit his church. He had just got saved and a lot of us players noticed the change in his life. I went to that church and got baptized. It was at that church, Windward Baptist Temple, where the Lord called me to preach. From there I went to Bible college at Oklahoma Baptist College. I went there for four years and graduated in 1992. Shortly after graduation I got married to Roxanne Keslo. I met her at College and started dating her my freshman year. After we got married we went on deputation. Finally after three years of traveling we got to the field on September 1, 1995. After we got settled a little we started a Bible study in my parents house in the middle of October, 1995. A few weeks later we had our first Sunday service. We rented a classroom out from Castle High School. On our first Sunday service we had 8 people. That included myself, Roxanne, Kelsie (our daughter), my Mom, my sister Lauren, Roylene Uperesa and her son, and Rick (who was from the church I used to go to). We met there for a few months, then we decided to move into a store front in Temple Valley Shopping Center. We stayed there for about 1 ½ years and then we moved to our current location, directly behind Hygenic Store. Windward Baptist Church now averages about 35 on Sunday Morning. This past Sunday we had 48 which is the most we have ever had. We have started a couple of new ministries in the past couple of months. We go to a nursing home right in Kahalu'u, and we hold services there once a week. We also have a "New Life in Christ" ministry where we are trying to minister to the drug addicts and alcoholics. There is a lot of drug problems in Kahalu'u. We know all that these people need is Jesus. We at Windward Baptist Church are just trying to do what God wants us to in order we can reach people around the world with the Gospel!
